You can still see Lon Chaney Jr. due to the eyes and (despite the hair) the skull. Those could not be changed by even the best make-up in 1941*. With computerization that was a different matter.
*Even in the silent film version of "Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde" in 1922 the mishapened (or sharpened) skull of Dr. Henry Jeckyll was angled in such a way that the well known "John Barrymore" profile of the star was maintained.
